How to Care for Clothes So They Last Longer
Clothes wear out faster from poor care than from regular use. A few small habits protect your money.
Read the care label
The tag gives the maximum water temperature and drying method. Following it avoids most shrinking and fading.
Wash smarter
- Use cold water for most loads
- Turn dark clothes and printed tees inside out
- Do not overload the machine
- Close zippers and Velcro before washing
Dry gently
High heat is hard on elastic and cotton. Air drying or low heat keeps fabric stronger. Hang knitwear flat so it does not stretch out of shape.
Handle stains quickly
Rinse the stain with cool water soon after it happens, and treat it before washing. Heat can set stains, so avoid drying until the mark is gone.
Store properly
Use sturdy hangers for jackets and shirts and fold knits. Keep clothes in a dry place, away from direct sunlight.
