How to Choose a Winter Jacket
A winter jacket is a bigger purchase than most clothes, so it is worth understanding what you are paying for.
Insulation
Down is very warm for its weight and packs small, but loses warmth when wet. Synthetic insulation keeps working in damp conditions and is usually cheaper. For wet cold, synthetic is the safer choice.
Outer shell
Water-resistant fabric handles light rain and snow. Waterproof shells with sealed seams are needed for heavy rain. Wind resistance matters as much as insulation in open areas.
Fit and layering
You should be able to wear a sweater underneath and still raise your arms without the jacket riding up. Check that the sleeves cover your wrists when you reach forward.
Useful features
- An adjustable hood
- Zippered pockets
- Storm flap over the zipper
- Cuffs that seal out cold air
Match the climate
Mild winters call for a light insulated jacket. Freezing temperatures call for thicker insulation and a longer cut.
